Digital Infrastructure

Digital infrastructure serves the intelligent urban transportation system, establishing a cloud-edge-end base for sharing perception/control data, thereby achieving seamless connection of the perception, control and decision-making systems.

Being‍‌‍‍‌ a major project of the "New Infrastructure" program, 5G network setup has been in the limelight as far as the Chinese government is concerned. After several rounds of technical trials facilitated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), an array of industrial standards has been established, and the three major telecommunications operators along with China Radio and Television (CRT) have been issued four 5G licenses. Due to high installation costs of millimeter-wave technology, the initial local 5G licenses were mainly for Sub-6GHz bands, and a few existing 4G frequency bands were partially merged—thus the coverage capability of 5G base stations was further enhanced. Throughout the last three years, the three big operators have made several massive 5G base station deployment rounds and in total, over 1 million base stations have been put into operation. To prompt the deployment of 5G applications and the innovative R&D of "5G + Industrial Internet," all three major telecom operators have drawn up plans. They follow the SA architecture as a vehicle for progress in the sector and hence, by using the independently developed 5G network slicing, industry-specific Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), and industrial internet platforms, they are able to back the digital transformation of enterprises.

The transformation of the manufacturing sector into a digital and networked one, and the use of 5G in the industrial internet have all come to be the main 5G application areas. In particular, the technology verification and application of “5G + Industrial Internet” have been implemented in various sectors such as manufacturing plants, transportation, ports, and energy, and have thus produced positive effects of demonstration.

As urbanization progresses, the equilibrium between the supply and demand of intelligent transportation and public travel services has started to change. The question of how to use technological methods to ease the traffic problem has become a major societal development issue. The intellectualization of the infrastructure is the prerequisite to the realization of the smart urban operations. More specifically, the intellectualization of transportation infrastructure signifies the deep integration of the advanced information technology with the transportation infrastructure. It pays attention to state-of-the-art world technologies and meets the requirements of national strategies such as the building of a "Transportation Powerhouse." By being independent of the traditional development mindsets and innovation paradigms, it seeks to set up a basic theory and technology system for intelligent transportation infrastructure that has the characteristics of high reliability, high security, and long service time. Besides upgrading the intelligent construction, the system will also enhance the capabilities for maintenance and health management of the transportation infrastructure, at the same time, it will create the theoretical and technical basis for increasing resilience, extending service life, and strengthening safety guarantees of transportation infrastructure.
