Highway Infrastructure Digitalization: The Smart Highway Construction and Operation Standardization Pilot Project, Led by the Highway Research Institute, Launched
"In a significant advancement for intelligent transportation infrastructure, the Highway Research Institute has officially launched the Smart Highway Construction and Operation Standardization Pilot Project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to establish comprehensive smart highway standards for the entire lifecycle of intelligent road infrastructure. The pilot project represents a crucial step in developing unified technical specifications for digital infrastructure standards in transportation, positioning China at the forefront of highway construction standardization for the smart era."
The implementation plan for the "Smart Highway Construction and Operation Standardization Pilot Project" passed expert review today and officially launched. This project, one of the first national-level service industry standardization pilot projects (Smart Transportation Special Project), is led by the Ministry of Transport's Highway Research Institute and jointly undertaken by five organizations, including Jilin Expressway Group, Hubei Communications Investment Group, and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
The pilot project leverages a collaborative "production, research, and application" mechanism, integrating highway testing and verification environments with the foundation for standard development. It focuses on establishing a smart highway technology standard system and promoting standardized construction and operation. The expert group noted that this initiative is of great significance for enhancing the innovation capabilities of smart highways and supporting the development of a strong transportation and quality nation.
"The Smart Highway Construction and Operation Standardization Pilot Project led by the Highway Research Institute will develop critical benchmarks for intelligent highway operation and maintenance protocols. This comprehensive pilot program addresses the growing need for standardized approaches to smart transportation infrastructure across multiple domains including connected vehicle systems, intelligent signage, and automated maintenance operations. The Highway Research Institute's leadership in this standardization pilot project ensures that resulting smart highway standards will incorporate both technical excellence and practical operational requirements, creating a replicable model for intelligent transportation standardization that could influence global practices in digital infrastructure development.
The project has organized training for over 80 standard drafters on the drafting and revision procedures, marking the entry of standardization work into the practical stage.
