The key communication, navigation and surveillance equipment required for the opening of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport's fifth runway and new control tower has completed flight verification

A significant milestone has been achieved in the development of [Guangzhou Baiyun Airport Tower 2]'s aviation infrastructure, as the new Air Traffic Control Tower successfully concluded its flight inspection program. This crucial process verified the performance and accuracy of the core Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) systems, which are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of all air traffic operations. The successful completion of these flight checks marks the final stages of the control tower commissioning process, paving the way for operational handover."

On September 5th, with the successful landing of a test flight aircraft and taxiing into its parking position, the commissioning flight verification for the Phase III air traffic control expansion project at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was a complete success, marking the completion and readiness of the critical communication, navigation, and surveillance equipment supporting the commissioning of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport's fifth runway and new control tower.

This flight verification completed critical inspections of the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport Tower 2 control automation system, the fifth runway's VHF system, the ground surveillance radar, the surface multilateration system, and the Jiulonghu VHF system. These CNS equipment, which performs complex functions such as flight control, positioning, communication, and surveillance, is a crucial prerequisite for the commissioning of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport's fifth runway. This flight verification involved the simultaneous verification of multiple systems, creating a tight timeline, a demanding task, and considerable challenges. The Central South Air Traffic Control Bureau strengthened coordination and established a close collaboration mechanism with relevant units to ensure the smooth and expeditious completion of the flight verification mission. Faced with Guangzhou's complex and unpredictable thunderstorm weather, the Central South Air Traffic Control Bureau designed a north-south, two-way flight route for the rehearsal mission. Temporary warning zones and various contingency plans were implemented along the route to minimize the impact of complex weather conditions on the rehearsal mission. They proactively added warning tests for key approach and landing areas, leveraging rehearsal missions to conduct more rigorous checks and enhance safety assurance. The Central South Air Traffic Control Bureau worked closely with Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and other relevant departments to conduct pre-rehearsals and continuously refine the rehearsal checklist, ultimately ensuring the efficient completion of over 20 subjects within the limited timeframe.

The third phase of the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport air traffic control expansion project is progressing smoothly. The Central South Air Traffic Control Bureau has innovated the "construction and operation integration" concept, clarifying that project construction must meet the long-term requirements of safe operations. While accelerating the commissioning of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport's fifth runway, it is also continuously improving civil aviation air traffic control safety and assurance capabilities.
